I just spent the last few hours playing Cave Crusade and I have to say, it's been a bit of a wild ride. The game starts off pretty straightforward - you're a little guy with a pickaxe, and you're trying to dig your way through a series of underground caves. Sounds simple enough, but things quickly get complicated. The caves are full of obstacles like spiky walls, bottomless pits, and even monsters that'll try to kill you. It's up to you to navigate through all this and make it to the exit in one piece.

At first, I was a bit put off by the graphics. They're not exactly cutting-edge - the game has a pretty retro feel to it, and some of the sprites look like they were ripped straight from an old 8-bit game. But as I kept playing, I started to appreciate the charm of the game's visuals. There's something endearing about the blocky, pixelated look of the caves and the little characters that inhabit them. And the sound design is top-notch - the sound effects are all really satisfying, and the music is catchy and energetic.

One thing that really impressed me about Cave Crusade is the level design. The caves are all really well-laid out, with multiple paths to the exit and plenty of secrets to discover. I found myself replaying levels over and over again, trying to find every last hidden gem and secret area. And the game does a great job of introducing new mechanics and challenges as you progress - just when you think you've got the hang of things, the game throws something new at you and forces you to adapt. It's a really great feeling, figuring out how to overcome a tough obstacle or finding a clever way to exploit the game's mechanics.

But Cave Crusade isn't all sunshine and rainbows. One thing that really frustrated me was the difficulty curve. Some levels are way harder than others, and it feels like the game just throws you into the deep end without much warning. I found myself dying over and over again on certain levels, and it got pretty frustrating at times. I'm not sure if it's just me, but it felt like the game could've done a better job of easing me into the tougher challenges. And the checkpoints can be a bit stingy at times - I lost count of how many times I had to restart a level from the beginning because I didn't have a checkpoint to fall back on.

Despite the frustration, I have to say that I'm really enjoying Cave Crusade. It's a great little game that's perfect for playing in short bursts - the levels are all pretty short, and it's easy to pick up and play for a few minutes at a time. And the sense of accomplishment you get from beating a tough level or finding a hidden secret is really satisfying. I'm not sure if I'd recommend it to everyone - it's definitely not for the faint of heart - but if you're a fan of tough platformers or just looking for something a bit different, Cave Crusade is definitely worth checking out.

Overall, I'd say that Cave Crusade is a solid 7 out of 10. It's not perfect, but it's a really fun and challenging game that's well worth playing. If you're in the mood for something a bit retro and a lot of fun, I'd definitely recommend giving it a try. Just be prepared to die a lot - and don't say I didn't warn you. With a bit more polish and a more gradual difficulty curve, I think Cave Crusade could've been a real standout title. As it is, it's still a great little game that's worth playing, even if it's not perfect.
