CritterMatch Review & Gameplay Guide
I just spent the last week playing CritterMatch, and I have to say, it's been a wild ride. I went into this game totally blind, I'd never heard of it before, but the name and the cover art seemed cute, so I figured why not. The game is basically a match-three puzzle game, but with a twist - instead of just matching gems or colors, you're matching cute little critters. It sounds simple, but trust me, it gets pretty challenging.
At first, I was really enjoying the game. The graphics are super cute, and the music is catchy. The levels start off pretty easy, but as you progress, they get harder and harder. I liked that the game didn't just throw you into the deep end, it eased you in and let you get a feel for the mechanics. The controls are also really smooth, I was playing on my tablet, and I had no issues with responsiveness or lag. The critters themselves are also really well-designed, each one has its own unique look and personality, and they're all just so darn cute.
But as I got further into the game, I started to notice some issues. For one, the levels start to feel really repetitive. I mean, I get it, it's a match-three game, there's only so much you can do, but it felt like I was playing the same level over and over again, just with slightly different objectives. And the objectives themselves can be really frustrating. Sometimes you'll be trying to collect a certain number of a specific critter, but the game just won't give you the right pieces. It's like the game is rigged against you, and it can get really annoying.
Another issue I had with the game is the lack of variety in the power-ups and special items. You get a few different types of power-ups, like a hammer that lets you smash a single tile, or a swap that lets you switch two tiles, but they're all just variations on the same theme. And the special items, like the "critter cage" that lets you collect extra critters, are just not that exciting. I felt like I was just using the same power-ups over and over again, and it got boring. I also didn't like that the game tries to get you to buy in-game currency and items. I get it, the game is free, and the devs need to make money somehow, but it feels like the game is designed to nickel and dime you to death.
Despite all my complaints, I still found myself coming back to CritterMatch again and again. There's just something about the game that's really addictive. I think it's the cute graphics and the satisfying sound effects when you make a match. The game also has a really good sense of progression, you feel like you're always working towards something, whether it's unlocking a new critter or beating a difficult level. And the game does have some really fun and challenging levels, especially the "boss" levels where you have to match a certain number of critters in a row.
Overall, I'd say CritterMatch is a solid, if not spectacular, match-three game. It's got some issues with repetition and lack of variety, but it's also got a lot of charm and addictiveness. If you're a fan of puzzle games, or just looking for something cute and fun to play, I'd definitely recommend checking out CritterMatch. Just be aware that the game can get pretty frustrating at times, and be prepared to spend some money if you want to progress quickly. But hey, it's a free game, so you can't really complain too much, right?
