How High Review & Gameplay Guide
I just spent the past weekend playing How High, and I have to say, it's been a wild ride. I went into this game not really knowing what to expect, but the concept of playing as Method Man and Redman, two of my favorite old school rappers, was too cool to pass up. The game starts off with you playing as either Meth or Red, and you've just been kicked out of college for, you know, being too high. From there, you've got to navigate the streets, sell some weed, and try to make a name for yourself.
At first, the gameplay was pretty funny. Running around, beating up cops, and selling weed to NPCs had me laughing out loud. But, to be honest, it gets old pretty quick. The combat system is pretty basic, and the missions start to feel like the same old thing over and over again. I mean, how many times can you sell weed to the same guy before it starts to feel like Groundhog Day? The graphics aren't bad, but they're not exactly mind-blowing either. It's like they took a PlayStation 2 game and just ported it over to the new consoles without really updating anything.
One thing that did impress me was the soundtrack. I mean, it's not every day you get to play a game with a soundtrack that features some of the biggest names in hip hop. From Redman to Warren G, the beats are straight fire. But, even with the sick soundtrack, it's not enough to carry the game. I found myself just turning it off and listening to the music on Spotify instead of actually playing the game. It's like, what's the point of having a great soundtrack if the gameplay is just meh?
I will give the game some credit, though. The story is actually pretty funny, and the voice acting is on point. Method Man and Redman do a great job of bringing their characters to life, and it's clear they had a lot of fun making this game. But, at the end of the day, it's just not enough to save the game from its overall lack of polish. I mean, I'd rather play a game that's not as funny, but at least has some depth and complexity to it. How High just feels like a shallow cash-grab, and it's a shame, because I think with a little more development, this could have been something special.
I'm not going to lie, I was really looking forward to playing How High, and it's a bummer that it didn't live up to my expectations. If you're a die-hard fan of Method Man and Redman, you might get a kick out of it, but for everyone else, I'd say just stick to something else. There are way better games out there that are worth your time and money. I'd say rent it or borrow it from a friend, but don't go out and buy it. Unless, of course, you're just looking for a laugh, and you don't care about things like gameplay or graphics. In that case, go for it, I guess.
All in all, How High is just an okay game. It's not bad, but it's not great either. It's just kind of...there. If you're looking for a game that's going to challenge you, or keep you entertained for hours on end, this isn't it. But, if you're just looking for something to play for a few hours, and you don't care about things like depth or complexity, then I guess How High might be worth checking out. Just don't say I didn't warn you.
